The Texas Renaissance Festival 2009
By Contributing Columnist Linda GJ aka Linda GJ
While writing this article, I truly got a natural high taking all these pics and wish I could have taken more, even though there are certainly a lot! While I was at the Festival, I asked everybody exactly what is the Texas Renaissance Festival and no one had a clear answer so I looked it up and did some research and narrowed it down to these words:
George Coulam started the Texas Renaissance Festival in 1974 on 15 acres with only 3 stages and anything one could imagine a 16th Century Village would have. From that first year of 33,000 patrons the Texas Renaissance Festival has grown up to 300,000 and is now considered the largest Renaissance themed-park in the entire United States!
Walking along the cobblestoned pathways amongst 330 16th Century designed shops, sights, sounds, and entertainment, you truly feel like you have been taken back into a whimsical fantasy world of the Renaissance Period. Even the majority of the patrons are dressed up in their own unique costumes of the era
I hope all of ye Lords and Ladies will enjoy this lovely world I am about to share with thee…

Great article! I remember going to the Texas Renaissance Festival for the first time in 1975. What an amazing place it is, just a great atmosphere. I love all the photos you took, Linda! Interesting costumes!

What a great article about the Ren Fest! Learned lots and really made me want to go again! It is a great place to have fun and a turkey leg when it isn’t Thanksgiving.

I loved the pics – brought back memories of when we would take our 3 kids, cousins, friends, to ride the camels, eat drumsticks and enjoy the Renaisance entertainment. We fought the crowds in the parking lot and the skizillions of cars all leaving at the exact same time. The traffic didn’t deter us from going back the next year because we loved it and had a ‘ball’!

I’ve never been to the Ren Fest, so I appreciated looking at all the pictures and reading about the history. Thanks, Linda, for the information and the pictures. Interesting, to be sure. Would love to go one day.

Great photos and write up, Linda!
We have our own Renaissance festival here in Minnesota. This year I found out that I can actually bring my blogging cat Katie (on a harness with proper health documentation) to the festival. I’m currently working on her social skills so that she will be ready to attend next year.
We’ve got a lot of work to do.
